A signature photographed on a desk comes with gray paper, shadows, and a white box that covers whatever sits under it. A transparent signature PNG has none of that: only the ink, ready to place on a letter, a form, or an invoice. Most of the result depends on the pen and the photo, so this guide starts there, then shows how to remove the background from the signature and check it before you use it.
The short answer
Sign on plain white paper with a bold, dark pen. Photograph or scan it flat in even light. Drop the image into Backgrounds Remover, keep Transparent, and download the PNG. Zoom in on thin strokes before you use it; if a line faded out, sign again with more pressure instead of patching it.
Step 1: Sign for the camera
The AI model has to tell ink from paper. A dark, heavy stroke stands out clearly; a faint one gives the model very little to work with.
- Use a bold, dark pen. A felt tip or gel pen in black or dark blue leaves a thick, even line. A fine ballpoint in light pressure leaves a thin, broken one.
- Use plain white paper. Lined paper, grid paper, or a printed form adds lines the model may treat as part of the signature.
- Sign a few times. Extra attempts on the same sheet cost nothing, and you can pick the best one later.
- Leave space around it. Keep other writing and the paper’s edge away from the signature so nothing else competes for the model’s attention.
Step 2: Photograph or scan it flat
A scanner gives the most even result. A phone works too if you take care with light and angle.
- Put the paper on a flat surface near a window or under a ceiling light, not a desk lamp that throws a hard shadow from one side.
- Hold the phone parallel to the paper, directly above it. A tilted shot makes the signature look slanted and one end blurrier than the other.
- Check that your hand or phone does not cast a shadow across the ink.
- Fill most of the frame with the signature, with a margin of paper around it.
- If your scanner saves a PDF, export the scan as JPEG or PNG instead, since the tool reads image files.
Step 3: Remove the background
- Open the background remover in your browser.
- Drop the photo on the page, choose it, or paste it from the clipboard. JPEG, PNG, and WebP work, and usually AVIF, GIF, and BMP.
- The first time, the browser downloads the AI model (about 176 MB) and caches it. Later images in the same visit skip that wait, and so do later visits while the browser keeps the model.
- When the result appears, leave the background on Transparent. The checkerboard shows what is now see-through.
- Select Download PNG.
The image is processed on your device and never uploaded. That matters more for a signature than for most photos, because a copy on someone else’s server is a copy you do not control. How on-device background removal works explains each step.
Step 4: Check the thin strokes
In our test on September 17, 2026, on a blue-ink signature drawn on textured paper, the bold main stroke came out clean, while a thin, light underline beneath it mostly disappeared: a faint line gives the model little to tell apart from the paper.
The same thing can happen to a faint tail, a light dot over an “i”, or the end of a stroke where the pen lifted. Check yours like this:
- Open the PNG and zoom in to full size.
- Compare it with the original photo, stroke by stroke.
- Look for gaps in lines that were continuous on paper, and for details that vanished completely.
If something went missing, sign again with a bolder pen and more pressure, then shoot it again. That is usually faster than repairing strokes in an editor, and it looks more like your real handwriting than a line redrawn with a mouse. The tool has no manual brush, so it cannot restore a lost stroke for you.
Specks of paper texture left around the ink are a smaller problem. The guide to fixing halos and rough edges shows how to erase them in GIMP or Photopea.
Step 5: Put it into a document
Keep the PNG as your master copy and insert it wherever you need it.
In Microsoft Word, insert the picture, then select it and open Layout Options. Microsoft’s guide to wrapping text and moving pictures in Word says to choose In Front of Text and then Fix position on page, so the signature stays over a signature line instead of moving with the paragraph.
In Google Docs, click the image to see its layout choices, which include Behind text and In front of text. Google’s help page on inserting images in Google Docs notes that these options are not available in pageless documents, so switch the document to pages format first.
In a PDF, many PDF apps let you place an image of your signature. The menu names differ between apps, so check your app’s own help for the exact steps.
Resize the signature to about the height of handwriting on the page, since an oversized signature looks pasted in. For slides and other office files, see cutouts for slides and documents.
On a white page, a faint edge around the ink is invisible. On a colored letterhead, look again at the real size before you send the file.
A signature image is not a certified e-signature
A PNG of your handwriting placed in a file shows what your signature looks like. It does not by itself prove who placed it there or when. Some recipients may accept a pasted signature image for everyday paperwork. Others may ask you to sign through a specific e-signature service, or with a certificate-based digital signature, or on paper.
Which one counts depends on the recipient and the document, and this guide cannot answer that for you. Before you rely on a signature image for a contract or an official form, ask the person or organization receiving it what they accept.
Treat the PNG itself with some care, too. Anyone who has the file can paste it into a document, so keep it in a private folder rather than a shared drive, and do not post it publicly.
Honest limits
- Thin, light strokes can drop out, as in our test. Bold, high-contrast signatures give the cleanest result.
- There is no manual brush and no free crop (the Size option only makes squares). Crop to the signature’s shape and touch up in an editor if needed.
- The output is a PNG at the image’s own size, up to 16 megapixels. Larger photos are scaled down first.
- The tool does not sharpen or redraw your handwriting. A blurry photo gives a blurry signature.
For a printed mark instead of handwriting, the guide to making a logo background transparent covers flat graphics.
